Treatments For Impotence

There can be a number of issues responsible for the cause of impotence, otherwise known as erectile dysfunction.

If the issue is due to psychological reasons, impotence can be aided by counselling. This treatment can also assist in the management of distress caused by the symptoms of impotence.

For clinical causes of impotence, there are a number of treatments for impotence available from your General Practitioner or Therapist, depending on the diagnosed cause of the problem.

There are a number of prescription drugs available to alleviate the symptoms of impotence, such as the commonly known Viagra and less commonplace Levitra and Cialis.

A more physical option available is the use of a vacuum therapy. Otherwise known as a penis pump, this is where the sufferer places his penis in a vacuum cylinder device, which helps to draw the necessary blood into the penis by way of negative pressure. A tension ring is then applied to the base of the penis to help to maintain the erection. This treatment is obviously best used just prior to intercourse.

Another treatment for impotence is the application of Alprostadil, a topical cream which is best applied to the penis 10-15 minutes before intercourse. However, a side effect of this treatment is that the effect can last for over four hours after the event!

Surgical treatments, such as prosthetic implants, are thankfully seen as a last resort for the treatment of impotence.
